Dealmed Acknowledges CPR/AED Awareness Week

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (June 5, 2012) -  Dealmed Medical Supplies acknowledges the annual CPR/AED Awareness Week the first week of June each year.  In 2012, CPR/AED Awareness Week is held June 4th through 8th.

“Back in December 2007, our U.S. Congress designated the first week of June each year as a time when we all should become more aware and educated about sudden cardiac arrest, or heart attacks,” said Morty Bistritzky, spokesperson with Dealmed Medical Supplies.  “We have seen the national statistics that nearly 400,000 heart attacks occur away from a hospital and 88% of those occur inside the home.”

Bringing awareness to CPR (Cardio pulmonary resuscitation), and becoming certified in the administration of CPR, can double or triple the chance of surviving a sudden heart attack.  As a statistic, approximately one third of heart attack victims receive CPR.
“Both the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross today support the new ‘hands-only’ version of CPR,” says Bistritzky.  “The hands-only version of CPR does not involve mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.”

An automated external defibrillator or AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient, and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.

“As part of National CPR/AED Awareness week,” says Bistritzky, “we encourage everybody to check their schools, business offices, workplaces and a public place to see if an AED is available and accessible or where the nearest one may be located.”
Prompt use of an AED provides the best opportunity to help someone suffering from a heart attack.

“We encourage people to visit the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross websites to learn more about hands-only CPR and how to get training instruction on CPR and the proper use of an AED,” says Bistritzky.

Dealmed Honors National EMS Week May 20-26, 2012
CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (May 20, 2012) -  Dealmed Medical Supplies invites all public communities to take time to acknowledge and honor the men and women who work in emergency medical response services, EMS.

“The national EMS system began officially back in 1974 when then President Gerald Ford signed the Emergency Medical Services Systems (EMSS) Act of 1973,” said Morty Bistritzky, spokesperson with Dealmed Medical Supplies.  “The first Emergency Medical Services Week was proclaimed in 1974 by President Ford.”

EMS Week always falls on the third full week of the month of May.  In 2012, EMS Week is celebrated May 20-26, 2012.  Wednesday, May 23, 2012, is designated as EMS for Children Day, a day when EMS services are encouraged to promote safety activities and information for children in each local community.

“The overall goals of EMS Week are to bring together EMS workers, medical personnel and community members to publicize safety, educate the public about the local EMS system, and to honor the dedication of those who provide daily lifesaving services on our community’s front lines,” says Bistritzky.

While EMS providers are encouraged to focus their activities on EMS Week itself, the lessons of safety and appreciation can be applied every day.

The three primary goals of EMS Week are:
1.  To promote the local EMS service within each local community;
2.  To educate the public on safety and health-related topics; and,
3.  To provide information on new EMS clinical procedures or equipment to EMS service providers.

“The theme for 2012 is EMS: More Than A Job. A Calling,” adds Bistritzky.  “The theme generally reflects the overall idea that EMS professionals did not choose this particular career for big salaries, comfortable working conditions, or real 9-to-5 hours, because they chose this career because they had a true calling to help and care for others in their critical time of need.”
